10 Things I’ve Learned About Basketball

I’m not a huge basketball fan (in fact it’s probably one of my least favorite sports), so when Wayne came home with 4 tickets to the Nuggets game the other night I probably wasn’t as excited as I should have been. Mostly I was just eager for the chance to go out, but when I found out he had 4th row seats and a VIP parking pass to boot, I thought - how bad could it be?  Anyway, here are 10 things I’ve learned about Basketball:

#1  Taking your teenagers to a basketball game is a great way to regain a little solid footing after spending the past weekend coming face to face with the fact that you are flying by the seat of your pants (parentally speaking) and that when it comes to parenting said teenagers, you really have a lot to learn (just think how brilliant we’ll be by the time Eli is there - poor Eli).
(BTW Maddy took a lot of the pictures)

#2  Basketball players are very big and full of tattoos

#3  Man is not necessarily a higher species – just look, this one is growing wings.
Actually, the Birdman along with Chauncey Billups and Carmello Anthony were the only three Nuggets I had heard of before and it really was fun to get to see them up so close.
(Carmello was hurt)

#4  Hero worship is contagious. I guess when you are paid millions to do what you do people get a little carried away catering to your every need – everyone fawning all over you and pampering you. I really have a low opinion of most basketball players (they seem to be a pretty questionable lot to me) so you would have thought I could have cared less about being so close to them etc., but I think if someone would have handed me a towel, I probably would have been willing to wipe their sweat up off the floor.

#5  The team mascot must in fact be a better athlete than the actual athletes themselves (or at least be in better shape). He never stopped moving and how would you like to be stuck in that outfit?

#6  Courtside lighting, while great if you’re trying to shoot a 3 pointer, really does nothing to complement the spectators (that’s my excuse for this picture and that’s all I have to say about that).

#7  Again, when you make millions you also get a free pass to argue and yell at the people who are in charge – boy was Billups mad at the refs! He spent the entire game (even while he was playing the game) picking a fight with the refs.

#8  The male dancers are much more talented and interesting than the cheerleaders – and I’m not just saying that.

#9  It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.
We were down by almost 20 points at one point in the game and I thought surely there was no way we were coming back, but it was a nail-biter to the very end. It was a great game!  First it was tied up with only 28 seconds left
Then the game went into overtime
Then it came down to the wire again - 109-109 with 24 seconds left

This is the guy that made the game winning shot again on the buzzer to put the nuggets up to win the game

Final score - 111-109 (I think), but it was very exciting!

#10  I think I'm a Nuggets Fan!

Mike and I have been to two Nuggets games thanks to free tickets from his work and it is really fun. I don't like to watch sports on tv but there is something to be said for being there in person and watching the action up close. Much more fun!
